Former President Mentions Kiva on Oprah and in New Book
Former President Bill Clinton was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show on September 4, 2007 to discuss the release of his New York Times best selling book, Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World. In the book and on the show, President Clinton endorses Kiva.Org, a world changing charity organization that allows everyday people to go online and loan money, as little as $25, to entrepreneurs in third world countries.
Co-founders of Kiva.Org, Matt and Jessica Flannery, were also invited to the show to provide more information, and to talk about the Kiva conception, which occurred after they were inspired by seeing entrepreneurs doing great things with little money as they were working in East Africa. To date, over $10 million in loans from over 122,000 people has been made through the organization with a 99.7% pay back rate.
With this recent endorsement, Kiva.Org had the opportunity to reach millions of more people from across the world. Alex Edelstein, CEO of Gemstone Development, and a Kiva board member, has been there from the start. "I'm a little annoyed," laughed Alex, "because I used to be the biggest lender on Kiva, but now the money is pouring in and I'm falling in the rankings and having trouble keeping up."
