GroupGemstone Announces Green-lighting of Film Investment, “Evening”
GroupGemstone announced today the green-lighting of its second theatrical film investment, Evening. The project will be produced by Hart Sharp and The True Film Fund II and will be co-financed with Focus Features (the independent distribution arm of Universal Pictures).
Evening tells the story of a dying woman reflecting back upon one weekend in her youth when she met the love of her life. The best-selling novel, written by Susan Minot, has been adapted for the screen by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham (THE HOURS).
The film’s director, Lajos Koltai, is a veteran cinematographer whose distinguished career includes more than seventy films. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on MALENA. Other notable credits include BEING JULIA, THE LEGEND OF 1900 and MEPHISTO. Lajos' directorial debut was FATELESS, released earlier this year to widespread acclaim and commercial success in Europe, becoming Hungary’s official submission to this year’s Academy Awards. Evening will mark Lajos' English language directorial debut.
Focus Features, the independent division of Universal Films, is best known for releasing Oscar™ winning films such as BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
, LOST IN TRANSLATION, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and THE CONSTANT GARDENER. In addition to co-financing the film with True Film Fund II, Focus will distribute the film worldwide.Evening will be shot in Newport, RI, where the project will benefit from a new Rhode Island tax incentive which reduces the cost of the film by an anticipated $2 million- from $14 million to $12 million.
Casting commenced in June for the roles of ANN LORD and ANN GRANT. The director’s first choice for ANN LORD was Vanessa Redgrave (MRS. DALLOWAY, JULIA, BLOW UP) and his first choice for ANN GRANT was Claire Danes (SHOPGIRL, ROMEO AND JULIET). Both actresses will play the same character, though fifty years apart in time. Vanessa Redgrave’s daughter Natasha Richardson (WHITE COUNTESS, Tony Award winner for CABARET) is in discussion to play CONSTANCE, Ann Lord’s older daughter, and Toni Collette (THE NIGHT LISTENER, SIXTH SENSE) as NINA, Ann Lord’s younger daughter. The young British actor Hugh Dancy (ELIZABETH I, ELLA ENCHANTED) has been cast as BUDDY; Patrick Wilson (ANGELS IN AMERICA, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) will play the romantic lead HARRIS. In an exciting debut role, Mamie Gummer has been cast as LILA, who in addition to being a gifted young actress, is Meryl Streep’s daughter.
Evening’s production team includes the legendary costume designer Ann Roth (THE HOURS, SILKWOOD, and POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE), Gyula Pados (FATELESS) as cinematographer and Caroline Hanania as production designer (SHALL WE DANCE, SERENDIPITY).
The production's start date is Tuesday, September 12th in Newport, Rhode Island.
